"Nawageshō"
In early summer, the garden of Ryosokuin reaches its most vibrant and enchanting state of the year. Ryosokuin is delighted to present the exhibition "Nawageshō", starting on June 1, featuring internationally renowned indigo farmers and dyers, BUAISOU.
Hangeshō also refers to a seasonal division in the traditional Japanese calendar, occurring on the eleventh day after the summer solstice. This period has long been considered the busiest time for farmers. Around the same time, the indigo fields of BUAISOU in Tokushima begin to flourish.
Stepping through the temple gate, the worldly clamor fades away, replaced by a cool and profound silence. In the moss-covered stones and the white gravel of the dry landscape garden, and in the strolling garden with its pond, the pure white leaves of the hangeshō plants shimmer in the early summer light, repelling the rainy season’s droplets as they gently sway—quietly welcoming each visitor.
This exhibition presents a series of artworks that fuse the traditional Japanese craft of aizome (indigo dyeing) with a contemporary sensibility. Each piece features nawa-monyō (cord-pattern) motifs that emerge on the fabric through the katazome (stencil dyeing) technique.
The name of the seasonal plant hangeshō (Saururus chinensis), whose leaves turn white in early summer, is said to have originally been written as “半化粧” (literally, “half makeup”), reflecting its unique appearance. Over time, the characters evolved into the current form, “半夏生”. The striking white-on-indigo patterns resemble makeup applied to cloth, echoing both the exhibition’s title, Nawageshō, and the visual transformation of hangeshō leaves as they pale.
In addition, Ryosokuin’s tearoom, Rinchitei, will be specially adorned in indigo, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience a tea ceremony surrounded by this deep and calming hue. This tranquil space—where indigo and tea harmonize—invites guests to open their senses and appreciate the subtle beauty of early summer.
The vitality of rural life and the stillness of a Zen temple. Ancient craftsmanship and modern expression. Within this space where such contrasts converge, viewers are invited to quietly reflect and find their own story.
A moment to be enveloped in deep indigo, and to glimpse the serene landscape that lies beyond the noise of daily life—
we warmly invite you to experience the spirit of early summer and the story of indigo that can only be found here.
